:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Allen S -- Best value book from Kindle in ages. : Happy couple, she goes away for a business conference and never returns. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2017 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Kurlylocs -- Two for One : There are two seemingly separate stories in this book. The only thing I see that loosely ties both together is the death of one non-major player from story #1. Most of this story takes place on The Celebrate, a cruise ship which becomes a character in it's own right. Of interest here are the laws that ensue while the ship moves about. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Janet Mendoza -- So many twists and turns. I loved it! : I'm a non-fiction memoir junkie and I typically don't read fiction novels. I had read Catherine's two other books (memoirs) and loved them. I was curious to see what her fiction writing was all about, especially since she was able to get a publishing company to take her on. WOW. Great writing. I have to say, I could totally see this story as a movie. It reads like a movie. It twists and turns and takes you down a path you don't even expect. I highly recommend! - 5.0 out of 5 stars from readerwriter -- Suspenseful thriller : I’m a fan of Catherine Ryan Howard. Her truthful writing is suspenseful and without bells and whistles. She just tells a great mystery/thriller. I loved 56 Days and The Nothing Man and I feel the same about Distress Signals. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2021 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Catte -- and it was different (in a good way) that the main protagonist was a man : This was a very absorbing book that kept my attention, and made me eager to return when I had to set it aside. The characters were interesting, and it was different (in a good way) that the main protagonist was a man, since many stories of this nature (search for the secrets of the mysteriously missing partner) have a woman in that role. Several characters were introduced in their own chapters, interrupting the main story line, and seemed disconnected from the main story, but eventually merged into the narrative. All together this meant an interesting menu of potential "bad guys", some of which developed more or less prominence as the plot came to a climax. The end tied together a lot of the complexity of the various key characters, and even the "bad" guys were not totally bad, nor were the "good" guys all that good in many respects. If one wants clearly defined white hatted heroes and black hatted villains, you won't find them here. Everybody's hats are varying distinct shades of gray. - from Sharon -- VINE VOICE : Who I felt bad for cause his mother really did not like him ... ( 4.0 out of 5 stars )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from papapownall -- You'll never want to go on a cruise ship again : Debut novel Distress Signals by Irish author Catherine Ryan Howard is a rattling good read. It is a twisty mystery which centres around a woman Sarah who goes on a business trip and never comes back and he boyfriend Adam's quest to find out what has happened to her. Adam's journey takes him to a mid market cruise ship in the Mediterranean and he hears that another woman has disappeared in similar circumstances. This story has the drama and suspense of a Taken movie and I could easily see this being adapted for the big screen. Yes it all gets a bit silly towards the end but modern audiences have come to expect this to some extent and to suspend belief for a while to go along with the ride. Anyone who reads this will never want to go on a cruise ship again, especially when they read the after-note from the author that confirms that the aspects of maritime law reflected in the story are based on fact. Five stars. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 26, 2020 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Keeper of Pages -- Distress Signals get all the stars! : A fantastic debut psychological thriller from Catherine Ryan Howard. You are thrown straight into the midst of things with this one, after reading the first sentence – “I jump before I decide that I’m going to.” – my brain went into overdrive: ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 26, 2016 )
- 3.0 out of 5 stars from Peliroja -- Three and a half stars : A new author for me and this was heading for a good 4* fast reading yarn. Until it let itself down in its denouement. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 29, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from S. Rogerson -- I was hooked from the first line of this page turning thriller : From the very first line, I was drawn in. It was a breath-taking start, literally. I felt myself struggling to breathe as I read it. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 1, 2016 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from WorcesterBlue -- Well worth reading : I am really enjoying all the Catherine Ryan Howard novels, so good and all of a consistently high standard. The books are well written, full of suspense and interesting characters. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 27, 2021 )
