• 4.0 out of 5 stars from Riverdancer -- An homage to Corduroy that develops into a story about Leukemia. : Chubby the teddy bear sits on his shelf in the La La Land Toy Store, anxiously awaiting the arrival of the child who will take him to his forever home. When Chubby begins to feel unwell, his friend Superhero suggests that Chubby see the doctor to make sure he is fully healthy before Christmas arrives. Chubby takes Superhero’s advice, and the doctor soon discovers that Chubby is suffering from Leukemia. Luckily, the other toys know just what to do, and under their tender care, Chubby bravely does what he must to make his body healthy once again. This unique picture book is an homage to the classic story of Corduroy with the added complication of childhood Leukemia. While the narrative begins much like a traditional picture book, it later incorporates scientifically accurate yet accessible details about what happens to children who develop this type of cancer. Large blocks of text appear on many pages, using child-friendly terminology to explain Chubby’s experiences in an approachable way. Though the overall presentation of the book makes the text hard to read at times, the message is nonetheless important for families in Chubby’s situation. Digitally rendered illustrations appear beside the text and, though they lack depth, serve to anchor the complex science behind a cancer diagnosis to a friendly reality. Families navigating Leukemia together will appreciate having a teddy bear named Chubby to guide them through this challenging time in a supportive and optimistic manner. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Malve von Hassell -- Enchanting tale that inspires hope and resilience : Chubby the bear lives in a toy shop where his current job is to wait for an owner. He embraces this important assignment with hope and love in his heart. Then he gets sick and has to get treated for leukemia. On his journey various characters help him along the way including a Super Hero, a guardian angel, and a doctor doll. In another department of the toy store, a car dealer made of building bricks gives him a bright yellow vintage VW Beetle toy car which Chubby uses to get from one place to the next, thrilled to find that this Beetle is shiny and new. Operating on the principle that children do better when they can understand and name the things they fear, the author explains the treatment is explained in terms that a child can understand. The author does not shy away from using proper medical terms—thus, a child, feeling lost and lonely and facing a bewildering array of strange equipment and strange words, would already be familiar with some of this. It also sets the stage for a child’s questions for more information, for instance, what exactly is meant by immune cells. After Chubby has completed his round of treatments, he returns to his spot on the toy store where eventually a child finds him and takes him home for Christmas. Endearingly that child appears to have lost its hair as a result of treatment, thus connected to Chubby whose crown still shows a spot where his fur hasn’t fully recovered. The illustrations are charming. The book ends with several activities perfect for a child trying to deal with dreary times while undergoing treatment--writing a letter to Chubby, a coloring page, and a paper toy cut out of Chubby. Highly recommended for a child before and during treatment, and some adults might find comfort in it as well. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2021 )
